Gross National Happiness and the search for a new global economic architecture: do we need an alternative development paradigm?

Upon signing the first Constitution of Bhutan H.M. King Jigme Khesar Wangchuck confirmed a solemn partnership of the Bhutanese people to strive for Gross National Happiness. Is ‘GNH’ uniquely applicable to Bhutan, or is it a message to the world?


Two international experts will explore the meaning of GNH and the recently launched GNH Index in the context of local development in Bhutan and the global economic crisis. Should progress be driven ‘beyond GDP’ by well-being or Quality of Life? What is genuine progress and how can it be measured? Why should it be measured?
